MAKE-Open

MAKE-Open Session (Open Data for Knowledge Extraction and Discovery)

Special Session of the CD-MAKE conference organized by Philip R.O. PAYNE, Kun HUANG, Nigam H. SHAH, Jessica TENENBAUM and Andreas HOLZINGER

Health sciences today are increasingly turning into a data science ecosystem. Health informatics studies the effective use of biomedical data, information and knowledge for problem solving and decision making, aiming to improve human health and well-being. Open data poses enormous opportunities and benefits for stimulating research to achieve these goals in a cross-disciplinary manner to encourage collaborations without any boundaries. Unfortunately, despite such opportunities, state-of-the-art methods and tools are often labor intensive and do neither scale nor support reasoning across heterogenous and high-dimensional data sets. Consequently, there is an urgent need of the international research community for the creation and delivery of pipelines able to support heterogenous workflows and open data sources. This is of utmost importance for large-scale identification of linkages between bio-molecular and phenotypic data in order to understand diseases.

Research topics covered by this special session include but are not limited to the following topics:

  • Design and development of theories, methods and tools targeting the use of open data
  • Automatic and interactive data integration, harmonization, & analysis for ML and knowledge extraction
  • Frameworks and pipelines to enable hypothesis discovery and/or testing from open data
  • Cross-country and cross-continent solutions and comparisons (e.g. Europe – USA – China)
  • Cross-Domain solutions (e.g. from molecules to populations)
  • Evaluation and benchmarking

This special session will bring together scientists with diverse background, interested in both the underlying theoretical principles as well as the application of such methods for practical use in the biomedical, life sciences and health care domain. The cross-domain integration and appraisal of different fields will provide an atmosphere to foster different perspectives and opinions; it will offer a platform for novel crazy ideas and a fresh look on the methodologies to put these ideas into business.

Excellent contributions will be invited to a special issue in BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Support (BMC MIDM, SCI-IF (2015): 2,042), see: http://hci-kdd.org/2017/04/14/call-papers-open-data-discovery-science-due-july-31-2017
